Perth Championships Serve Up a Weekend of High-Intensity Badminton

Kingsway Indoor Stadium hosted a thrilling weekend of badminton action as the 2025 Perth Championships brought together 228 players across Open to D Grade categories, along with Under 11 and Under 15 competitors.

The tournament, held by Badminton WA, welcomed players from across the state, with strong representation from regional clubs in Albany, Bunbury, Geraldton, Mandurah, and Bakers Hill. Their dedication to travel and compete added a special energy to the event.

Over 360 matches were contested across the weekend in a tight schedule that tested the endurance of players, umpires, and officials alike. While the standard on court was high, the wintry weather conditions off court posed an additional challenge, but the spirit of competition never wavered.

This event also marked the final hit-out before WA’s U15 and U19 teams head to Launceston in July for the Yonex National Championships. With national pride on the horizon, the Perth Championships provided an ideal testing ground for our young talent.

“The Perth Championships are not just about crowning winners, they’re about bringing together our badminton community, showcasing our developing talent, and celebrating the spirit of the game,” said Christine Ferguson, President of Badminton WA. “It was especially rewarding to see the strength of our junior divisions and the support from our regional members.”

Umpire development was a strong focus of the weekend, with a number of in-training officials undergoing assessment. BWF-accredited assessors Kelly Hoare and Greg Vellacott were on hand to guide WA’s next generation of technical officials, while a referee assessment added to the educational atmosphere. A reminder to players that all are required to umpire when asked to do so.

Off the court, fundraising efforts from the U15 State Team were in full swing. Led by team manager Ly Kapadia, parents ran a food stall on Saturday, while players sold raffle tickets for prizes donated by generous sponsors, Badminton World Balcatta (racquet) and An Yu Badminton Academy (shuttles). Congratulations to lucky winners Joyce and Saj!

Providing support on the ground was Winnie Ng from Madeley Physiotherapy, acting as First Aid officer and offering consults throughout the tournament.

A highlight for many was seeing Bernice Teoh back on the court following a period of absence due to overseas and Australian Falcon Team duties. Teoh didn’t miss a beat, taking out the Women’s Singles title and partnering with Dharshinie Vasigaran to win the Women’s Doubles.
