The future of Australian badminton was on full display at Kingsway Indoor Stadium this week, as more than 220 of the nation’s brightest young athletes came together for the Yonex U13 & U17 National Team Championships, proudly hosted in Western Australia.

From September 30 to October 2, players representing every state and territory battled it out for national glory, with the event made possible thanks to the support of Badminton Australia, Yonex, the WA State Government, and the City of Wanneroo.

Western Australia Claims Double Bronze

WA’s rising stars proved they belong among the country’s best, delivering outstanding performances across both age groups:

  • U17s – June Bevan Trophy
    🥇 Gold: Victoria
    🥈 Silver: New South Wales
    🥉 Bronze: Western Australia

  • U13s – Pat Daw Trophy
    🥇 Gold: New South Wales
    🥈 Silver: Victoria
    🥉 Bronze: Western Australia

The results mark a significant achievement for Western Australia, with both junior squads showing resilience, skill, and team spirit in front of a passionate home crowd. Another incredible effort, was that from the U17s Scorpions who came 5th.

A Celebration of Talent and Community

The Championships brought together not only elite competition but also the vibrant badminton community. Families, coaches, and supporters filled Kingsway Indoor Stadium, creating an atmosphere that celebrated both the competitive spirit and the friendships built through sport.

Badminton WA Executive Officer, Rob Kennedy, praised the efforts of the players and the event team:
“To see WA juniors standing on the national podium in both the U13 and U17 age groups is a testament to their hard work, as well as the dedication of our coaches, parents, and volunteers. A special thank you must go to our State Team Coaches and Managers, who put in a mountain of work behind the scenes to prepare and support our players. Just as importantly, our volunteers, who give countless hours with little recognition and are the backbone of events like this. These Championships simply couldn’t happen without them, and we can’t thank them enough. Hosting this event in WA is huge for our sport, and the support from Yonex, the State Government, and the City of Wanneroo has been instrumental.”

Looking Ahead – Individual Championships

While the team event has now concluded, the action is far from over. Attention turns to the Yonex U13 & U17 National Individual Championships, running from October 3 to 6 at Kingsway Indoor Stadium. Entry is free, offering the WA community the perfect chance to witness the next generation of Australian badminton talent in action.
