Angela Shen strikes gold as WA celebrates at Yonex U13 & U17 Nationals

Kingsway Indoor Stadium • October 3–6, 2025 — Western Australia capped a superb week on home soil at the Yonex U13 & U17 Badminton Individual National Championships

Hosted at Kingsway Indoor Stadium. With players from all eight states and territories competing across Boys’ and Girls’ Singles, Boys’ and Girls’ Doubles, and Mixed Doubles, WA athletes delivered podium finishes, breakthrough performances, and a title to remember. 

Gold for WA: Shen claims National crown

Apex Badminton’s Angela Shen struck gold in U17 Mixed Doubles alongside partner Ruiqi Chen, sealing a standout week that announced a new national champion from WA. Angela’s coach, Eric, praised the achievement as the product of “a lot of hard work and determination” and a platform for even bigger goals to come.

Shen’s path to the title featured a tense all-WA semifinal against teammate Rachel De Joya (NKBA), a match that could have tilted either way. Post-match, both athletes reflected on years of pushing one another in WA to be better and to take on the country’s best, exactly the spirit on show throughout the week.

Double medal haul for De Joya

NKBA’s Rachel De Joya left the individuals with two national bronze medals:

  • U17 Mixed Doubles (XD) with Chen Qiu

  • U17 Girls’ Doubles (GD) with Ria Bairy

Securing hardware in two events at a national championships is a special feat, and a testament to Rachel’s consistency and competitive edge.

U13 Boys’ Doubles: four young guns on the podium

WA’s emerging U13 brigade produced a brilliant collective return in Boys’ Doubles (BD), claiming bronze medals:

  • Anto Arun Mangaly & Shriram SelvarajBronze, U13 BD

  • Akhilesh Jagadish & Mark JanssenBronze, U13 BD

From day one, the quartet brought energy, courage, and quality representing their clubs, coaches, families, and Badminton WA with pride.

Event buzz, community pride

Kingsway Indoor Stadium buzzed all week as more than 200 of Australia’s top junior athletes competed for national honours. The championships were proudly supported by the WA State Government through the Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program, contributing $50,000 to help bring an elite junior event of this scale to Western Australia.
