Western Australia’s umpiring community reached a proud milestone at the recent WA State Open Championships, with three local officials awarded their National Umpire Accreditation.

Isabella Yii, Charles Pan, and Leon Nguyen received their certificates in recognition of their commitment, skill, and professionalism on court. The achievement reflects not only years of training and practical experience, but also the ability to officiate at the highest domestic level of badminton in Australia.

National accreditation is a significant step in the pathway for technical officials, often opening opportunities to umpire at national tournaments and, in time, international events. For Badminton WA, the recognition of three umpires at once also signals the strength and growth of its officiating program.

"Having Isabella, Charles, and Leon achieve this level is a fantastic result for WA," said Rob Kennedy, Executive Officer. "Their dedication ensures that our competitions are run to the highest standard and provides inspiration for others to take up officiating."

Technical officials play a vital role in ensuring fairness and integrity in badminton, often working behind the scenes but carrying huge responsibility during competition. With WA’s badminton calendar growing in both participation and profile, the need for well-trained officials has never been greater.

Badminton WA is encouraging anyone interested in becoming an umpire, line judge, or referee to get involved. Training and development opportunities are available at various levels, with clear pathways for those aspiring to officiate at national or even international events.
