VICTOR CLASSIC BADMINTON TOURNAMENT 20-21 NOV
|
|
|
Kingsway Indoor Stadium hosted the last badminton tournament of 2010 - the Victor Sports International Badminton Classic - over the weekend of 20-21st November! With over 140 people taking part in graded divisions including a junior division, there was plenty of badminton action played in good spirits. Results will be updated here...

2010 COMM GAMES - AUS LADIES DOUBLES WIN BRONZE!!
|
|
|
Unseeded Australian duo Kate Wilson-Smith & He Tian Tang yesterday evening won Women's Doubles Bronze Medals at the CommonWealth Games in Delhi. Having only recently paired up they combined very well to defeat the higher ranked English pairing of Jenny Wallwok & Gabby White 21-23, 21-12, 21-16.
In the teams event WA's Nick Kidd contributed very well but unluckily the team lost to the higher ranked Singaporeans 3 matches to 1 in the Quarter-finals to end a good over-all team performance by all the Australians.

WA JUNIOR STATE CHAMPS & HIGGS TEAMS EVENT
|
|
|
The 2010 WA Be Active Iluka Higgs Trophy and State Junior Championships, held in Geraldton between 4-8th October, were a great success. The event was excellently organised by the Geraldton Junior Committee and the standard of play was very good with juniors from Geraldton, Perth and Bunbury competing. 2010 AUS UNI GAMES - SILVER FOR UWA MEN & CURTIN WOMEN
|
|
|
UWA Recreation Centre in Perth hosted the Australian Uni Games Badminton Competition from Monday 26th September til Friday 1st October. 9 University teams from across Australia competed for the Men's and Women's Team event titles. There were many exciting games throughout the week with the players giving it their all, and what a thrilling climax there was on the Friday in the final tie of the tournament - the Mens Teams tie between UWA and University of Sydney. It took 4 hours to complete the 5 highly contested matches, with the tie going to the final match, which was won by University of Sydney 23-21 in the 3rd game!
Congratulations to all the players from all the universities, and especially to the WA teams - UWA Womens team narrowly missing out on bronze, Curtin Womens team who won Silver and of course the Mens UWA team who won Silver.

2010 CURTIN OPEN

|
|
Curtin Stadium hosted the Curtin Open on Saturday 2nd October. This event was open to everyone and with over 70 people taking part, including players from the East coast it was played in good spirits and alot of fun was had by all the participants, with some close contests in the finals.

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS COUNTRY WEEK
|
|
|
19 District High School Teams took part in the 2010 Country Week from Monday 20th Sep to Friday 24th Sep at the Loftus Rec Centre. Geraldton Grammar School sent 3 teams & were successful in taking home 3 shields in Division 1, 2 and 3! Northcliffe District High, competing for the first time, were runner-up in those divisions but took out the Division 4 shield.

WA OFFICIAL IN NEW CALEDONIA
|
|
|
WA Official, Jiten Bhatt, who recently passed his Oceania Accreditation Umpiring Level was over in the island paradise of New Caledonia to play and umpire in the New Caledonia International between 10-12th September. It was an amazing experience, with fellow Aussie duo Luke Chong & Nelson Oon winning the MD title.

2010 SILVER CUP DOUBLES TOURNAMENT 4-5 SEPTEMBER
|
|
|
Kingsway Indoor Stadium once again held the Silver Cup Doubles Tournament over the weekend of 4-5th September. The doubles and mixed doubles comp with a friendly twist was played in a round robin format with 3 divisions plus a Junior division as well. With over 150 players participating it was a great fun event with some exciting matches.

WA UNDER 15s TRAVEL TO SHEPPERTON

The WA Under15 State team has set off to the Val Nesbitt Trophy & U15s National Carnival, in Shepperton, Victoria. Between 28th September & 2nd October, they will take part in the teams followed by the individuals competition

BWF Umpire Kelly Hoare & Line Judge Bruce Napier (both from WA), officiated at the World Championships in Paris. There were also a number of Australian players participating in the event, including WA's Leisha Cooper who was defeated in the 2nd round of the Women's Doubles event.

WA WIN 2 TITLES IN ADELAIDE
|
|
|
WA's Leisha Cooper and Nick Kidd took the Women's and Men's Singles Titles respectively at the Australian Closed Individuals Champs, which followed the State Team Nationals. Nick successfully defended the title he first won last year with a 21-19, 21-12 win against SA player Chad Whitehead. Leisha showed great determination and fight to beat SA player Leanne Choo in a tough 55 minute marathon 21-17, 16-21, 21-15 to win the national title for the very first time. She also came runner-up in the Women's doubles match.
Elliott Clutterbuck & Fei Fei He won the Mixed Doubles Plate. Elliott teamed up with Victorian Luke Chong in the Mens Doubles but got knocked out in the semi's by the eventual champions. Nick & Elaine Wong were also knocked out by the eventual champions in the semi's of the Mixed doubles. |

WA SENIOR STATE TEAM WIN SILVER IN ADELAIDE
|
|
|
WA Senior State team Beat Tasmania and Victoria to make the finals of the State Nationals being held in Adelaide 1-8th August. They gave a great fight but eventually went down to the home favourites South Australia in the final of the Ede Clendinnen Shield on Tuesday 3rd August. The matches were played out in front of a great crowd filled with very vocal South Australian supporters, however the team fought amazingly well and will be coming back with well deserved Silver Medals!!!

The Australian Team for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games was announced during the finals of the Yonex Australian International and there was great news for WA player Nick Kidd who will be part of the 10 strong team going to compete. |

WA 2010 SPRING PENNANTS - SERIES 2 WINNERS - VENUS

Badminton Pennants Winter - Series 2 started on 3rd June and ran for a period of 7 weeks. There was one division played on Thursdays (at Herb Graham Rec Centre). Going into the final week things were very close with a number of teams still in the hunt but Venus, captained by Jillian Chai, came out on top to claim the title. Congratulations to the winning team. STARS BADMINTON WA CHAMPIONSHIPS - JUNE17-18
|

Morley Recreation Centre hosted the Future Stars Badminton Championships during the weekend of 17-18th July.
With over 220 players taking part in the tournament, there were some great matches played including the highlight being the Mens Singles Final played between WA State players Himanshu Thakker & Elliott Clutterbuck. Himanshu won 23-21 in the 3rd set. Elliott & Fei Fei He won the Div 1 Mixed Doubles. Fei Fei combined with Women's Singles winner, Elaine Wong, to win the Womens Doubles. 2010 AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL GRAND PRIX

|
From Tuesday 13-18th July, 3 WA Umpires, 2 WA Line Judges and 2 WA players were in Melbourne for the Australian International Grand Prix. The tournament attracted some great players from many countries including Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia & Vietnam.

WA PLAYER WINS 2010 YONEX U19 INTERNATIONAL TITLE
|
|
|
News just in that WA player Bryan Tang combined with Victorian Sawan Serasinghe to win the Boys Doubles Yonex Under 19 International Championship, held in Launceston, Tasmania. Big congratulations to both players!!!
The competition continued in Tasmania, with the CP Maddern U19 State Teams event. The WA State Team came 10th and gained valuable experience for the future. |

'BE ACTIVE' JUNIOR OPORTUNITY CAMP 12-14 JULY

|
|
The 2010 'BE ACTIVE' Junior Oportunity Camp was held at Kingsway Indoor Stadium from Monday 12th-Wednesday 14th July (10am-1pm each day). It was open for all juniors aged 8-15 years old and was a great opportunity to learn new skills, play some games and enjoy some fun competitions.

Kingsway Indoor Stadium in Madeley hosted the WA State Championships Tournament over the weekend of 26th & 27th June, with CASH PRIZES for Open Grade! There were some great matches and contests with a mixture of Knockout and Round Robin events. All matches were best of 3 with setting.

'BE ACTIVE' COUNTRY CARNIVAL JUNE 5-6

Kingsway Indoor Stadium in Madelely held the 2010 'Be Active' Country Carnival over the weekend of 5th & 6th June. It was a great event bringing together players from all over WA in a fun but competitive atmosphere. Action got under way from about 9am on both days with presentations taking place on the sunday afternoon.

'BE ACTIVE' FAMILY FUN OPEN DAY - SAT 15 MAY

The Family Fun Open Day took place on Saturday 15th May at Kingsway from 11.30am- 3.30pm. There were loads of FREE badminton played, with games, prizes, fun & laughter. Over 70 people took part and at the end there was an exhibition singles match between Nick Kidd & Himanshu Thakker.

SUMMER PENNANTS - CONGRATS TO THE CAPSICUMS

Badminton Pennants Summer Series, which ran from the March 11th for a period of 7 weeks, saw players split into 8 teams and do battle on the court in a round-robin format event. A big congratulations to the Capsicums who claimed the title after coming through all 7 of their matches undefeated.

The 'Be Active' Upper Secondary School Tournament was held on 29th April at Kingsway Indoor Stadium. 146 players representing 11 schools took part in this excellent event with some very close matches.
The winners of the girls doubles were Nathalie Then & Kelly Cooper from Willeton Senior High School. Runners-up were Cynthia Tam & Jessica Deck from Penrhos College. The winners of the boys doubles were Gia Huynh & Drew Cooper from Ocean Reef Senior High School. Runners-up were Aaron Tiong & Teng Ang from Willeton Senior High School. |

TSWA UNIGAMES 23 APRIL

Murdoch University held the Tertiary Sports WA Uni Games on Friday 23rd April. There was a Mens and a Womens Teams Event, with 4 Universities from WA taking part in the day long round robin competition followed by a final between the 2 table toppers. UWA came out on top in both Mens and Womens Events to win Gold. |

JUNE BEVAN CARNIVAL

Badminton WA hosted the June Bevan Trophy and Australasian U17 Championships, featuring the top under 17 junior players from around Australia and New Zealand, at the Kingsway Stadium from 2nd - 10th April. With WA coming an excellent 5th in the teams event & WA boys also winning the Boys Doubles Individual Championships.

INTERNATIONAL FUTURE SERIES

WA Players Nick Kidd & Leisha Cooper took part in the Altona International Champs held between 9-11th April in Altona. Leisha played well but was unlucky with the draw & lost to the eventual champions in the Womens Singles, Mixed Doubles & Womens Doubles events. Nick played well to beat the 2nd seed from NZL in the first round & Jeff Tho (Aussie Number 1 & seeded 3/4th) to reach the Mens Singles finals but there he unfortunately lost to the Number 1 seed from Malaysia - Yogendran Krishan.

Kingsway Indoor Stadium in Madeley hosted the 'Be Active' Kingsway Tournament, over the weekend of the 27th and 28th February. Over 140 players took part in the season opener, in temperatures over 37 degrees!

A Formal Umpirees Course was held over 4sessions in Feb/March 2010. To allow those interested a chance to get to know the laws better or take the first steps towards becoming an official line judge, umpire, or even referee. 1 COACHES COURSE - 6TH FEB 2010

An all day Level 1 Coaching Course was run on Saturday 6th Feb 2010 at Kingsway. It was conducted by Edwin Chew and the participants involved learnt alot from his experience and knowledge of the game.
